Incredibles 2 (2018) Review

"Why would they change math!?"
-Bob Parr

After failing to stop the Underminer's (John Ratzenberger) attack, the Parr family destroys a lot of the goodwill they earned in the previous movie, and the Super Relocation Program is shut down, leaving the superheroes to fend for themselves.  Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), Helen, aka Elastigirl, and Lucius Best, aka Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson), are approached by the owner of DEVTECH, a telecommunications company, Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk), who is a huge superhero fan and wants to see superheroes become legal again.  He recruits Helen to become the face of a campaign to garner support for superheroes.  She agrees and resumes fighting crime and DEVTECH films it all, showing the destructive battles from the hero's perspective for a change.  Bob is forced to become a stay-at-home-dad and has to deal with Violet's (Sarah Vowell) boy troubles, helping Dash (Huck Milner) with his homework, and discovering the insane amount of powers Jack-Jack (Eli Fucile) has.  Helen, on the other hand, faces off against a dangerous new super-villain, Screenslaver (Bill Wise), who can control people through TV and phone screens.

What Works:

Incredibles 2 works for a lot of the same reasons the first movie works.  First off, the character chemistry is amazing.  The Parr's are a very believable if somewhat dysfunctional unit, but can work together really well if the need arises.

Bob's storyline is amazing.  Watching him struggle with being a stay-at-home-dad is hilarious.  Apparently, if you are a parent, this stuff will hit way to close to home.  I saw this movie with my father, who could not stop laughing at some of the craziness Bob has to deal with.  I think parents will probably appreciate this movie more than anyone.

Helen's storyline is also very engaging.  She is a great character and it's really fun to see her get to be front and center in this movie.  And Screenslaver is a terrifying and interesting villain.  The trippy, seizure-inducing fight between the two of the them is one of the highlights of the movie.

Finally, Jack-Jack is given much more to do in this movie, and honestly, he is the best part of the film.  The relationship between him and Edna Mode (Brad Bird) is absurdly amazing, and watching the rest of the family try to deal with his wide variety of powers is very amusing.  Best of all is the fight between Jack-Jack and a raccoon, which should win the award for Best Fight Scene of the Year.

What Sucks:

My only real complaint with Incredibles 2 is that the plot is pretty predictable.  It's easy to guess Screenslaver's identity.  It's still a fun ride, but they could have made it a bit more difficult to figure out the truth.

Verdict:

Although it's not quite as good as the original, Incredibles 2 is worthy of it's name and is another excellent Pixar film and a truly great sequel.  Apart from a bit of predictability in its story, Incredibles 2 does everything right and truly has got it going on.

 9/10: Great
