Lost: Season 2, Episode 8 "Collision" Review

"I feel dead."
-Ana Lucia Cortez

The 8th episode of season 2 of Lost picks up with Sayid (Naveen Andrews) and Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) fighting after the death of Shannon (Maggie Grace).  Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez) knocks Sayid out and forces Libby (Cynthia Watros) at gunpoint to tie him to a tree, while the others protest at her unhinged behavior.

Mr. Eko takes the unconscious Sawyer (Josh Holloway) on alone to find Jack (Matthew Fox).  He and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) treat Sawyer's injuries and learn of Shannon's death.  Mr. Eko refuses to take anyone back to Sayid and Ana Lucie fearing more people will get hurt.

Ana Lucia sends Michael (Harold Perrineau) to retrieve food, water, and ammo for her, so she can live in the jungle alone.  In return, she will free Sayid.  Michael arrives at the Hatch and he and Jack arm up to save Sayid.  Mr. Eko convinces them not to when he mentions Ana Lucia's name and Jack realizes he knows her.  Mr. Eko offers to take Jack to her, unarmed and alone.

Bernard (Sam Anderson), Libby, and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) decide they don't want to be involved with Ana Lucia any longer and go to the beach camp.  Bernard and Jin are finally reunited with their wives.  Meanwhile, Ana Lucia and Sayid have a long talk about their pasts.  Ana Lucia unites him and gives Sayid an opportunity to kill her, but he declines.  They meet up with Jack and Mr. Eko for an awkward reunion.

In flashbacks, we learn that Ana Lucia was a cop who was shot in the line of duty and lost her unborn child.  She is cleared to return to work, but is clearly unfit for duty when she pulls her gun during a domestic disturbance call.  The man who shot her, Jason McCormick (Aaron Gold), is arrested and confesses, but Ana Lucia says it wasn't him and he is released.  That night, Ana Lucia follows Jason out of a bar and murders him.

What Works:

Naveen Andrews is always great, but he kills it in this episode.  He spends most of "Collision" tied to a tree, but that doesn't stop him from delivering the goods.  His monologue about torturing Sawyer and deserving to die is excellent and one of the this episode's highlights.

The reunion between Bernard and Rose (L. Scott Caldwell) and Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Jin is heart-warming and may have brought a tear to my eye.  It's great seeing something good finally happen to these characters and Michael Giacchino's score just elevates it even more.

The scenes with Jack and Kate golfing are some of my favorite in terms of their relationship.  I'm not the biggest Jack/Kate shipper in the world, but their smack talk is really fun.  I just wish we had gotten to see their game play out.  Kate putting Jack in his place all the way would have been excellent.

Finally, Mr. Eko is so good.  Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is an excellent actor and has a magnificent screen presence.  It's great finally seeing him on screen with Jack and Locke (Terry O'Quinn.

What Sucks:

My only real complaint with this episode is Ana Lucia.  She sucks.  She's far and away my least favorite of the main cast from the first two season.  While this episode and "The Other 48 Days" make her behavior more understandable, she's the farthest thing from a likable character.  It's impossible to root for her, which makes it tough when she is the protagonist of this episode.

Platinum Polar Bear:

The Platinum Polar Bear goes to the most useful character in a given episode.  For "Collision," this award goes to Mr. Eko for besting Sayid in a fight, getting Sawyer to Jack, and convincing Jack to see Ana Lucia without a weapon.  He keeps a level head when no one else does and picks up his second award.

Verdict:

"Collision" is a solid episode of Lost with excellent performances from Naveen Andrews and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, a heart-warming reunion, and a fun golfing subplot.  I can't stand Ana Lucia, but this episode has still got it going on.

 8/10: Really Good
