South Park, Season 23, Episode 8 "Turd Burglars" Review

"Am I just an Airbnb in Santa Clarita?"
-Kyle Broflovski

Season 23, episode 8 of South Park follows Sheila Broflovski, who becomes seriously ill and needs a fecal transplant.  The transplant is successful and Sheila is healthier than ever.  Several of Sheila's friends are jealous and bribe Stan, Kenny, and Cartman into stealing Shelia's poo so they can have a fecal transplant of their own.

Kyle learns about all of the microorganisms that live in his body and becomes very distressed with this information.

The fecal transplants go wrong and the ladies of South Park get very sick and spread the infection to the rest of the town.  Stan, Kenny, and Cartman attempt to steal the feces of Tom Brady, which is referred to as "The Spice Melange."  Kyle and his microbes arrive and help them find Brady's feces and use it to save the town.

What Works:

This episode presents itself as "One For the Ladies," and this tone reminds me of a few episodes in the past.  It focuses on the female characters and has them at the center of a tremendous amount of poop jokes.  It's pretty hysterical.  This is one of the most disgusting episodes of South Park and this presentation makes it all the more funny.

Kyle's storyline is utterly bizarre and I love it.  Early on he watches a video about coping with his mother's fecal transplant, which is hilarious on its own, but he slowly descends into madness thanks to his paranoia about microorganisms.  Apparently parts of his story are a parody of the movie Dune, which I've never seen, but it doesn't matter.  His visions are so surreal that they work on their own.

Tom Brady is fantastic in this episode and I love how annoyed he gets with everyone trying to get his poop.  We get plenty of internal monologuing from various characters scheming to get his "Spice," which is another Dune reference, I guess.  Again, it doesn't matter if you haven't seen it.  It's still hilarious.

We don't get a ton of it, but I could use a whole episode of Stan, Kenny, and Cartman operating a Turd Burglar business.  The scene where the boys sneak into Kyle's basement is classic South Park and a great story.

Finally, Ike has a scene-stealing performance when he tries to stop his Mom from revealing she had a fecal transplant.  Ike is a great character and his reaction to his Mom's openness with her transplant is amazing.

What Sucks:

I got nothing for you.

Verdict:

"Turd Burglars" is a hilarious episode of South Park and will go down as a classic.  It's a throwback episode and feels very old school.  All of the stories work on their own and enhance each other.  It's funny, strange, surreal, and disgusting and I love it.

 10/10: Amazing
