Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) Review

Image
"Welcome to the MCU.  You're joining at a bit of a low point." -Deadpool Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) has retired from being the mercenary Deadpool until he is kidnapped by the Time Variance Authority (TVA).  With the death of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Wade's timeline is deteriorating and Wade is given the opportunity to join the Sacred Timeline.  Wade decides to fight back in order to save his friends and timeline and searches the multiverse for help in the form of another Wolverine.  Unfortunately, the only Wolverine he can get to help him is known as the worst Wolverine in the multiverse. Spoilers below.  In short, this isn't a very good movie in terms of narrative or story.  I wouldn't say it's really about anything.  It's an excuse to have Deadpool and Wolverine in the same movie and done properly.  It's more of an event special and less of a film.  It's fun, but definitely the weakest of the Deadpool trilogy. What Works: The best part of

Twisters (2024) Review

"We got twins!  Twins!" -Boone After a traumatic and deadly event involving a tornado, Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones) retires from storm chasing.  Five years later, Kate's old teammate, Javi (Anthony Ramos), convinces her to go back out into the field to try and get the most advanced scan of a tornado ever. What Works: I was really nervous when I heard about Twisters .  The original Twister is my favorite movie of all time.  I was obsessed with it when I was a kid.  I've seen it about a hundred times and can basically quote it word for word.  I was nervous a sequel might tarnish the original in some way.  I cannot express to you the relief I felt when the movie ended.  The original Twister is left untainted and Twisters manages to be a very worthy sequel that I loved watching. Twisters has some really great characters and performances.  All three leads give very likable and complex performances.  The characters are very well written and have great arcs.  And all of

Twin Peaks: Season 3, Part 15 "There's Some Fear in Letting Go" Review

"Goodbye, Margaret." -Deputy Hawk The episode begins with Nadine Hurley (Wendy Robie) visiting Ed (Everett McGill) and freeing him to be with Norma (Peggy Lipton).  Ed immediately goes to the Double R Diner, but has to wait for Norma on pins and needles as she speaks to her business partner, Walter (Grant Goodeve).  Norma ends their franchise deal and has Walter buy her out so she can focus on running the Double R.  After the meeting, Ed asks Norma to marry him and she agrees. Mr. C (Kyle MacLachlan) arrives at the convenience store and he is greeted by the Woodsmen.  They eventually take him to a motel room where Phillip Jeffries (Nathan Frizzell) is waiting for him, although Jeffries no longer appeared human, but machine.  Jeffries claims that he was not the one who tried to have Mr. C killed.  When Mr. C asks him who Judy is, Jeffries says Mr. C has already met Judy and tells him how to find her. Mr. C is teleported outside of the motel and back to the convenience store,

A Quiet Place: Day One (2024) Review

"This place is shit." -Sam A Quiet Place: Day One follows a terminally-ill woman, Sam (Lupita Nyong'o), as she embarks on a dangerous journey across New York City during an alien invasion, along with her cat, Frodo. Some mild spoilers below. What Works: The strongest aspect of this movie is Lupita Nyong'o's performance.  Sam is such an interesting protagonist.  In most movies like this one, the protagonist is pretty much solely focused on survival.  That isn't the case here.  Sam is terminally ill and when the movie starts, literally has days to live.  She isn't trying to survive this invasion.  She just wants to eat some pizza before she dies.  That's an incredible and interesting route to take this movie.  It sounds a little silly on paper, but it's really emotional and works very well. Our other leads also do a fantastic job.  We have Joseph Quinn as Eric, who is in severe shock and doesn't exactly make rational decisions, but he's such

Twin Peaks: Season 3, Part 14 "We are Like the Dreamer" Review

"I'll eat you." -Sarah Palmer Part 14 picks up with Gordon Cole (David Lynch) calling Sheriff Frank Truman (Robert Forster).  Truman informs Gordan about the discovery of the pages of Laura Palmer's (Sheryl Lee) diary and that they suggest there are two Cooper's (Kyle MacLachlan). Albert Rosenfield (Miguel Ferrer) tells Tammy Preston (Chrysta Bell) about the very first Blue Rose case, which was investigated by Gordan and Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie).  They came across two versions of a woman named Lois Duffy, one of whom was a doppelganger who was conjured, also known as a Tulpa. The agents question Diane (Laura Dern) about the last night she saw Cooper and she confirms that he mentioned Major Briggs (Don S. Davis).  They tell her about a ring found in Briggs' stomach and that the names of Dougie (Kyle MacLachlan) and Janey-E (Naomi Watts) were inscribed on the ring.  Diane reveals her half-sister goes by Janey-E and that she is married to a man named Dougi
