Cocaine Bear (2023) Review

Image
"Bears can't climb trees." -Henry A drug-runner drops his supply of cocaine on Blood Mountain, but before anyone can reach it, a bear finds it and quickly gets hooked.  Now, everyone on Blood Mountain is in danger as the bear searches for more nose candy and it will kill anyone that gets in its way. What Works: You know what?  I'm just happy this movie got made.  It's such an insane premise.  I know it's partially based on a real incident, but the fact that a studio allowed this film to be made is still pretty wild.   The bear attacks are the best parts of the movie.  There are some really fun and crazy moments with the ambulance chase probably being the highlight.  This is what we wanted to see in this movie and on that front, Cocaine Bear delivers. The gore is also solid.  A lot of it is CGI, but all of it is over the top.  Sure, I'd prefer practical effects, but if you're going to go digital, at least make it over the top.  We get some absolutely g

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) Review

"That guy looks like broccoli." -Hank Pym When Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and his family are pulled into the Quantum Realm, they discover that Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) neglected to tell them that the Realm has intelligent life and is basically its own universe.  When Janet's nemesis, Kang (Jonathan Majors), discovers her return, he starts hunting her and her family and he will do whatever it takes to find them. Spoilers below! What  Works: I don't know why people are getting so bent out of shape with this movie.  This was an absolute blast.  Post- Endgame , this is exactly the kind of stuff I wanted from the MCU.  I don't want straight-forward superhero movies.  I'm here for the weird shit.  I'll take stuff like this and Thor: Love and Thunder everyday over Black Widow or Black Panther: Wakanda Forever .  Quantumania is truly bizarre and I dig it. The one thing everyone can agree in is how great Jonathan Majors is as Kang and I'm really excited

Twin Peaks: Season 1, Episode 6 "Cooper's Dreams"

Image
"It's the secrets people keep that destroy any chance they have of happiness." -James Hurley "Cooper's Dreams" starts off with a group of prospective business partners for Ben Horne (Richard Beymer) arriving from Iceland during the night and they keep the entire Great Northern Hotel awake.  Ben and Jerry (David Patrick Kelly) plan to throw them a proper welcoming party the following night and possibly take them up to One Eyed Jacks in order to finalize the deal.  Leland Palmer (Ray Wise) arrives in order to help Ben and Jerry, but he ends up just crying in Ben's office. At Jacques' (Walter Olkewicz) apartment, Dr. Hayward (Warren Frost) confirms that the blood on Leo Johnson's (Eric Da Re) shirt was Jacques', not Laura's (Sheryl Lee).  Cooper finds a copy of Flesh World  and they manage to connect Leo, Jacques, Laura, and Ronette Pulaski (Phoebe Augustine) to the magazine ads and that Laura had photos taken of her in a cabin owned by Jac

Twin Peaks: Season 1, Episode 5 "The One-Armed Man" Review

"Look at us.  Two men apiece and we don't know what to do with any of the four of them." -Norma Jennings The episode begins with Sheriff Truman (Michael Ontkean) and Deputy Andy (Harry Goaz) going over to the Palmer house to talk to Sarah (Grace Zabriskie) about her visions.  She describes her vision of BOB (Frank Silva) and then her other vision of someone digging up Laura's (Sheryl Lee) necklace in the woods.  Donna (Lara Flynn Boyle) is present and becomes worried about the necklace.  Later, she and James (James Marshall) go check on the necklace and find that it is gone. Agent Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) interviews Dr. Jacoby (Russ Tamblyn), who says on the night after Laura's murder, he followed a man in a red Corvette, but lost him in the woods.  Laura had told him about the man.  Truman confirms that Leo Johnson (Eric Da Re) drives the same type of car.  Cooper gets a call from his supervisor, Gordon Cole (David Lynch), who says that a bird scratched Laura an

Knock at the Cabin (2023) Review

"Will you make a choice?" -Leonard Eric (Jonathan Groff), his husband, Andrew (Ben Aldridge), and their daughter, Wen (Kristen Cui), take a family vacation to an isolated cabin in the woods.  However, their relaxation is interrupted by four unexpected guests who have an impossible choice for the family to make. What Works:   What I love about this movie is how fast it gets going.  The opening scene is what we saw in the trailer, where Leonard (Dave Bautista) walks out of the woods to talk to Wen.  It quickly escalates to Eric and Andrew being tied up in the cabin.  We hit the ground running and almost everything in the trailer is from these early scenes that set the stage. The entire movie is wonderfully paced.  Sure, it slows down to give us a moment to breathe from time to time.  We get quick flashbacks that fill in the backstories of Eric, Andrew, and Wen and there's plenty of time to develop their characters, but that doesn't stop the action from rapidly picking
