Lost: Season 4, Episode 3 "The Economist" Review

Image
"Half the stuff he says goes way over my head; the other half goes way, way over." -Frank Lapidus "The Economist" picks up with Sayid (Naveen Andrews) making a deal with Frank (Jeff Fahey).  If Sayid can rescue Charlotte (Rebecca Mader) from Locke's (Terry O'Quinn) group, Frank will fly him to the freighter.  Sayid heads to the Barracks along with Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Miles (Ken Leung).  They find Hurley (Jorge Garcia) tied up in a closet, but it's a trick.  Hurley leads them to Ben's (Michael Emerson) house, where they are all swiftly captured Back at the helicopter, Daniel (Jeremy Davies) orders a rocket launch from the freighter, but it arrives at the chopper very late, which causes Daniel to suspect there is a time displacement between the Island and the outside world. Sawyer (Josh Holloway) convinces Kate to stay with him, while Sayid and Locke agree to trade Charlotte for Miles, so Sayid can get information aboard the ship.  They return

Ranking the MonsterVerse Movies

Image
I recently watched Godzilla vs. Kong and decided to go back and rewatch the first three movies of the MonsterVerse.  Now that I'm done, I can rank these bad boys from best to worst. #1. Kong: Skull Island (2017) Taking an easy 1st place is Kong: Skull Island .  It helps that the movie takes place in one location, an island, rather than the globetrotting the rest of the films do.  This one has easily the best characters in the MonsterVerse with Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly getting to go full crazy.  The fight sequences are fantastic and the movie is beautiful in its visuals.  It also helps that this was the first monster movie I ever watched, so there is definitely some nostalgia attached to this one.  Some of the other main characters are papers thin, but even they are better than some of the other characters in this franchise.  9/10: Great  #2. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) This might be the biggest hot take on this list.  Simply put, I'm a sucker for big, dumb

Thirteen Ghosts (2001) Review

"Goats?" -Arthur Kriticos When his uncle dies, Arthur Kriticos (Tony Shalhoub) is left his vast and strange mansion.  As he and his family go check the place out, they find themselves trapped inside with both the living...and the dead. What Works: The production design of Thirteen Ghosts is pretty spectacular.  It pretty much entirely takes place in a haunted mansion.  Immediately, you imagine a pretty classic idea of what that might look like.  You couldn't be more wrong.  All of the walls of the house are made of glass and have writing on them.  The house is incredibly unique and I have to give major props to production for putting this thing together and giving us a truly unique setting, no matter how poorly the movie uses it. The designs of the titular ghosts are all pretty cool.  I only wish we saw more of them.  Only about three or four get extended screen time.  The designs of both the Hammer (Herbert Duncanson) and the Jackal (Shayne Wyler) are especially cool an

Voyagers (2021) Review

"We won't ever see the planet." -Sela As Earth dies, humanity breeds a group of children in isolation and sends them into space to colonize a habitable planet.  The new planet is 86 years away, so they themselves won't actually make it there, but their grandchildren will.  10 years into the journey, Christopher (Tye Sheridan) and Zac (Fionn Whitehead) discover they are all being drugged to keep them docile and emotionally stunted.  As the crew stops taking the medication, the mission becomes critically endangered. What Works: Voyagers has a really interesting premise and for the 1st act, it works really well.  The kids on this ship are in a really interesting predicament.  They didn't ask to be put on this ship.  They were never given any choice and now they find out they are being drugged to keep them under control.  It's an interesting conflict from an ethical perspective and I was really looking forward to seeing how all of the characters were react to thi

Lost: Season 4, Episode 2 "Confirmed Dead" Review

Image
"I saw a cow." -Frank Lapidus "Confirmed Dead" starts off with the discovery of the wreckage of what appears to be Oceanic 815 and what seems to be every body accounted for.  While watching the news footage, Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies) gets very upset, but isn't sure why. The flashbacks continue to introduce us to people from the freighter.  Next we meet Miles Straume (Ken Leung) who can speak to the dead and helps put spirits to rest.   Then we meet Charlotte Lewis (Rebecca Mader), an anthropologist who travels to a dig in Tunisia, where the bones of a polar bear have been discovered.  She sees that it has a collar with the Dharma logo on it and seems to recognize it. Next is Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey), who, while watching footage of the wreckage, is shown what appears to be the body of captain Seth Norris (Greg Grunberg), but Frank sees that the body is not wearing a wedding wing and realizes that it isn't Seth.  He calls up the hotline to let them kno

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Review

"I love crazy ideas.  They made me rich." -Walter Simmons When Godzilla attacks an Apex Cybernetics facility seemingly unprovoked, the CEO, Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir), recruits geologist Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård) to find a power source to defeat Godzilla in the Hollow Earth.  Nathan realizes they will need to have Kong lead them into the Hollow Earth to find the power source and if the two Titans run into each other, the destruction will be catastrophic. Spoilers ahead for Godzilla vs. Kong .  I'll be getting into spoilers below.  If you like big, dumb monster movies, than go see this film and come back and read my review.  It's a fun movie, but it's really dumb.  SPOILERS AHEAD!  You've been warned. What Works: What are we all here for?  The fights between Godzilla and Kong.  Nothing else really matters.  It's all about the fights, and boy do they deliver.  Godzilla and Kong only face off twice in the film, but both sequences are awesome and

Hunter Hunter (2020) Review

"Don't run." -Renee Mersault Joseph Mersault (Devon Sawa) is a fur trapper who lives in a remote cabin with his wife, Anne (Camille Sullivan), and daughter, Renee (Summer H. Howell).  When a lone wolf begins eating what they catch in their traps, Joseph decides to take care of the problem himself, but there is something much more dangerous than a wolf out in the woods. Spoiler Alert!  I can't really say much about this movie without giving stuff away.  This is a really good, if brutal, thriller.  If that sounds like your cup of tea, go check it out and then come back and read this review.  SPOILERS AHEAD!  You've been warned. What Works: I really like Devon Sawa, so I was really excited to watch this movie.   This is a very serious role for him, which I'm not used to seeing, but I like it.  He's not the main character of the movie, which caught me by surprise, and he gets taken out of the plot way too early, but I liked what we got from him. I was fortuna
