The 8 Worst Movies of 2020.

Normally, I do a 10 Worst Movies of the Year post, but I didn't get to see as many movies as I would have liked this year.  In fact, there are only 8 movies I saw that I would consider bad.  So, here are my 8 Worst Movies of 2020, from best to worst!

#8. The New Mutants

The New Mutants had a ton of potential and wasted most of it.  This final installment of the X-Men series is a horror movie first and a superhero movie second.  I love that idea.  We do get a lot of creepy and nightmarish elements that work well.  The 3rd act is fun and Maisie Williams does a good job.  Unfortunately, the movie handles the story in the least interesting way and makes the characters difficult to get to know, which makes it hard to be invested in their story.  The way the facility is run makes no sense and Anya Taylor-Joy's character is just the worst.  I would say this is my most disappointing movie of the year.

#7. Scoob!

When Ken Jeong is the best part of your movie, you know you have a problem.  His character, Dynomutt, is the only one I never got annoyed with.  There are a few fun moments and the 3rd act is fun, but this really isn't a Scooby-Doo movie.  There isn't a spooky mystery to solve.  This is a superhero movie.  Why?  Shaggy, my favorite member of the gang, is kind of a jerk here and I don't know why they didn't get Matthew Lillard to voice him.  Fred is reduced to a dumb jock and the movie has so many pop culture references, it feels like a bad episode of Family Guy.

#6. Underwater

Underwater has some stuff going for it.  The claustrophobic elements work well, the score is awesome, the 3rd act is pretty solid, and T.J. Miller actually does a really good job.  However, this movie doesn't have a first act.  That's an important part of a movie.  It sets up characters and gives us a reason to care about them and we simply don't have it here.  The movie tosses us straight into the deep end.  None of the characters (besides T.J. Miller's) are interesting and there are points where it is hard to hear the dialogue.

#5. The Hunt

I really enjoyed the first act of The Hunt, which consistently faked us out with who our main character was with a bunch of recognizable actors.  Betty Gilpin ultimately plays our main protagonist and does a good job of being a quirky badass.  She and Hilary Swank do an incredible job in the final fight sequence.  The characters are the biggest problem of the movie.  They are all obnoxious, which is the whole point, but they aren't fun to watch.  It was just insufferable.  The film is supposed to be a satire, but it falls flat and isn't subtle in the slightest.  And for a movie called The Hunt, there isn't actually much hunting going on.  Sure, it subverts our expectations, but not in a fun way.

#4. Fantasy Island

Now we're getting into the really bad.  The actors are all solid (with one exception), there is one really well done sequence early on, and I genuinely had no idea how this movie was going to end.  Apart from that, this movie sucks.  Michael Peña was the wrong choice for this role and doesn't work at all.  The tone is all over the place with a ton of different fantasies, none of which are very interesting.  And the big reveal at the end makes zero sense and one tug on a loose string causes everything to fall apart.  In hindsight, nothing about this movie makes any sense at all.

#3. The Babysitter: Killer Queen

These final three movies are all just awful.  I really liked the first Babysitter movie, but this sequel is the pits.  There are some awesome kills and when the movie stops cracking jokes to get emotional, it mostly works, but it rarely stops making jokes and they are almost never funny.  The whole premise of the movie, which is nobody believes the first movie actually happened, makes no sense and starts the film off with a faceplant.  The script is overly complicated, Samara Weaving (the best part of the first movie) is barely in this one, and the returning characters become stale very quickly.

#2. We Summon the Darkness

There is a twist early on in this heavy metal slasher film that works very well and Alexandra Daddario gives a delightfully unhinged performance.  That's all the positives I have.  The kills are boring and terrible, the characters are either boring or insufferable as well as slow and stupid, Jonny Knoxville is wasted as a fire-and-brimstone preacher, and the movie wastes what could have been a really fun premise.

Finally, the worst movie of 2020!

#1. The Jesus Rolls

This sequel to The Big Lebowski feels more like a diet version of The Devil's Rejects.  Bobby Cannavale tries his best, but he's the only good thing in the film.  It's a boring and slow movie that feels completely aimless.  It's impossible to get invested in it and you're just waiting for it to end.  It's almost like doing a film that solely focuses on John Turturro's character, Jesus, was a bad idea.  Besides John Turturro, no one wanted this, no one needed this, and yet we have it.

So what do you think?  Did I miss anything?  Let me know!
