Lost: Season 4 Finale "There's No Place Like Home, Part 2" Review

"Lie to them, Jack.  If you do it half as well as you lie to yourself, they'll believe you."
-John Locke

The season 4 finale picks up where the season 3 flash-forward left off.  Kate (Evangeline Lilly) chews out Jack (Matthew Fox) for asking her to return to the Island.  She mentions being approached by someone called Jeremy Bentham who asked her to return to the Island as well.  Jack is carrying Bentham's obituary in his pocket.

At Santa Rosa, Hurley (Jorge Garcia) is visited by Walt (Malcolm David Kelley).  Walt says that he was visited by Jeremy Bentham and wants to know why the Oceanic 6 are lying.  Hurley says it's to protect everyone still on the Island.  Later, Sayid (Naveen Andrews) arrives at Santa Rosa and kills a man outside of it that was watching Hurley.  Sayid breaks Hurley out of Santa Rosa and says they are not going back to the Island.

In London, Sun (Yunjin Kim) approaches Charles Widmore (Alan Dale) with an offer to work together as they have shared interests.

Kate has a nightmare that Claire (Emilie de Ravin) is in her house and tells her not to bring Aaron (William Blanchette) back to the Island.

Jack returns to the funeral home and breaks in, where he is met by Ben (Michael Emerson).  Ben tells Jack that to get back to the Island, they all need to go back, and says they need to bring Bentham's body as well.  Bentham is revealed to be John Locke (Terry O'Quinn).

On the Island, Keamy (Kevin Durand) and his team return to the helicopter with Ben in tow.  The Others launch an attack on the mercenaries with help from Kate and Sayid.  They manage to kill all of the mercenaries except Keamy.  After a brutal fight between Keamy and Sayid, Richard (Nestor Carbonell shoots Keamy in the back.  The Others agree to let the survivors leave the Island and Ben returns to the Orchid.

Locke asks Jack to stay on the Island, but Jack refuses.  Locke says that Jack will then need to lie about everything that happened on the Island.  Ben returns and he and Locke descend to the real Orchid station far below to prepare to move the Island.

Daniel (Jeremy Davies) continues to ferry people to the freighter, but both Miles (Ken Leung) and Charlotte (Rebecca Mader) refuse to leave.

Jack, Sawyer (Josh Holloway), Hurley, Kate, Sayid, and Frank (Jeff Fahey) all board the helicopter and fly to the freighter.  When they start losing fuel, Sawyer gives Kate a secret message before jumping into the ocean and swimming back to the Island.

On the freighter, Michael (Harold Perrineau) freezes the battery to give them some warning in case the bomb goes off.  Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) work on trying to defuse it.

Keamy reveals he is still alive when he enters the Orchid.  He reveals his heart rate monitor is a dead man's trigger.  If he dies, the bomb will blow up.  Locke tries to talk Keamy down, but Ben kills Keamy anyway.  Ben then tells Locke to leave and meet up with the Others because the person who moves the Island is banished in the process.

Frank lands on the freighter and patches up the chopper.  In the chaos of people attempting to escape the freighter, Desmond, Sun, and Aaron join the main crew on the chopper, but Jin isn't able to make it on deck in time.  The bomb eventually goes off, which kills Michael and everyone on the freighter, including Jin it seems.  As Frank flies back to the Island, Ben makes it into a frozen cave with a donkey wheel inside of it.  He pushes the wheel, which causes the Island to vanish.  With nowhere to land, the chopper crashes in the ocean and the survivors get on a life raft.

That night, the group spots a boat.  Jack convinces them that they have to lie to protect everyone left on the Island from Widmore.  They are rescued by the boat, which is owned by Penny Widmore (Sonya Walger), who reunites with Desmond and agrees to help with the lie.  A week later, they stage the Oceanic 6 rowing a raft to a fishing village.

What Works:

This episode builds tension like no other.  What's genius about this is usually a detriment.  We know that 6 characters are going to make it off the Island, which should remove some of the stakes, but these characters start the episode spread all over the place and there are other major characters with them.  While we know the Oceanic 6 are going to make it, the tension comes from the fates of Frank, Sawyer, Jin, Desmond, and Michael.  Why weren't they with the Oceanic 6?  What's going to happen to them?  That's what makes this episode exciting.  We get to see how all the pieces of this puzzle fall into place.

The music is also fantastic in this episode.  Michael Giacchino is at his best here.  I love the music when the helicopter takes off from the Island and when the Oceanic 6 make it to the fishing village.  It's melancholy when it should be a celebration.  It perfectly captures the tone of the episode.

The reveal that John Locke is the person in the coffin caught me totally off guard the first time I watched this episode.  This raises a whole lot of new questions about what happens to John after the Island moved. It's exciting and really threw me for a loop.  There's no way they would kill off John Locke, is there?

The fight between Sayid and Keamy kicks a lot of ass.  We've been waiting all season for these two to go at it and it does not disappoint.

Finally, Michael Emerson is fantastic as always.  I love how cold-blooded he is when he kills Keamy.  He doesn't give a rat's ass about anyone on the freighter and I appreciate that about Ben.  He's just so good at being bad.

What Sucks:

I got nothing for you.

Platinum Polar Bear:

The Platinum Polar Bear goes to the most competent character of the episode.  Since this was a double episode, I'll give out two awards.  The first one goes to Michael for freezing the bomb and giving everyone a chance to escape.  He finds some redemption on his way out the door here.

The second award will go to Jack for saving Desmond from drowning after the helicopter crash and for coming up with the lie.  Here are the rankings at the end of season 4.

Jack: 12
Sayid: 11
Locke: 9
Hurley: 7
Mr. Eko: 5
Sawyer: 4
Desmond: 4
Kate: 4
Sun: 3
Charlie: 3
Jin: 3
Juliet: 3
Michael: 3
Rose: 2
Ana Lucia: 2
Ben: 2
Lapidus: 2
Boone: 1
Libby: 1
Bernard: 1
Alex: 1
The Man in Black: 1
Richard: 1
Tom: 1

Verdict:

The finale of season 4 is another fantastic finale of Lost.  It's one of the best paced episodes of the show with a ton of tension.  The music is fantastic, the reveals are insane, the action is awesome, and the performances from Emerson and Fox are top notch.  This episode has absolutely got it going on.

 10/10: Amazing
