The 7 Worst Movies of 2021

Normally, I do a 10 Worst Movies of the Year post, but I actually only saw 7 movies that I would consider bad.  So we'll do a 7 Worst Movies instead.  From Best to Worst, here is my list!

#7. Voyagers

I'm not exactly a big fan of Sci-fi movies, but I thought the trailer for this one was interesting and had a sort of mystery element.  That isn't really the case, which is a shame.  I do like the 1st act of the movie and the predicament the characters find themselves in.  Colin Farrell does a good job and the technical aspects are all great and really set the mood.  However, these characters are beyond stupid and really take me out of the movie.  The dialogue is way too on the nose, the characters are extremely unlikable, and the danger presents itself in the form of rape at times, which makes the movie much harder to enjoy.

#6. Space Jam: A New Legacy

Most people will probably be surprised I don't have this movie lower, but it does a few things better than the original movie.  LeBron James in a much better actor than Michael Jordan and the character actually has an arc.  There are a few amusing moments throughout the film, some decent visuals, and an excellent cameo.  However, the movie is overstuffed with too many references to other properties and the movie mostly fails to be fun, which is what made the original work.

#5. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

I love the first two SpongeBob movies and had high hopes for this one.  The Old West sequences is bizarre and insane, the new animation style is cool, there are a few really funny moments, and I like Keanu Reeves' performance.  However, the movie grinds to a halt in the 3rd act with random flashbacks to the upcoming spin-off that retcon established continuity in the series.  Plus the 1st act of the movie is all stuff we've seen before and pretty much recreates the 1st movie.  Finally, King Poseidon is a very dull antagonist, which is even more obvious with how great the villains of the first two movies are.

#4. The King's Man

Now we're getting into the really bad.  The King's Man is my most disappointing movie of the year.  The original movie is one of my all time favorite films and I was super excited for this prequel.  It had a ton of potential.  The action is as awesome as ever, I like the historical events depicted in the story, and there is one really well done death scene.  The rest of this movie was no fun to sit through.  It feels like two different films crammed together, with one of those films being an absolute snoozefest.  Nothing very interesting happens in the 1st act, the villain is lackluster, and the movie as a whole is very frustrating to watch because I could have made a better Kingsman movie in my sleep.

#3. Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City

This isn't the worst Resident Evil movie, but that isn't saying much.  By all accounts, it's mostly faithful to the first two games, there are a few creepy moments, and I liked Avan Jogia's perfromance and character arc.  I just don't think this series translates well to film from video games.  Nearly all of the characters suck and aren't interesting in the slightest, the editing is wonky at times, and none of the action is memorable.  Maybe it's time to let this series stay dead.

#2. Chaos Walking

Chaos Walking definitely has an intriguing premise, decent performances from Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley, and a couple of genuinely funny moments, but the problem is this is a dystopian movie that completely fails at world building, an absolute necessity in this genre.  The noise is very overwhelming, they waste some neat ideas, the characters are all undercooked, and the 3rd act is boring and the movie fails to do anything creative.

Finally, the worst movie of 2021!

#1. The Little Things

This is a ripoff of Se7en, but done about as poorly as possible.  There are a few moments with solid cinematography and lighting and the big reveal isn't bad, but those are the only positives I can give this one.  The cast does not fit their roles, with Jared Leto trying way too hard and both Denzel Washington and Rami Malek seeming a bit lost.  That's the director's fault, not the actors' however.  The editing is terrible and it feels like the movie is missing scenes.  The writing is a disaster with way too much exposition and incredibly stupid character decisions.  It's actually insulting how bad this writing is.

So, what do you think?  Did I miss anything?  What's your least favorite movie of the year?  Let me know!
