Lost: Season 6, Episode 3 "What Kate Does" Review

 "No.  I'm not a zombie."
-Sayid Jarrah

"What Kate Does" starts off in the chaos of Sayid's (Naveen Andrews) return to life.  Sawyer (Josh Holloway) seizes the opportunity to steal a gun and escape the Temple, telling Kate (Evangeline Lilly) not to come after him.  She decides to anyway.  Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and two Others, Aldo (Rob McElhenney) and Justin (Dayo Ade) accompany her.  Soon after, Kate knocks the Others out and splits up from Jin.  She goes after Sawyer, while Jin heads back to the Temple and plans to look for Sun (Yunjin Kim) and the Ajira plane.  Soon after, Aldo and Justin catch up to Jin, who gets caught in a bear trap.  Aldo tries to shoot Jin, but he and Justin are both shot by Claire (Emilie de Ravin).

Kate finds Sawyer at the Barracks.  They talk and reveal they both blame themselves for Juliet's (Elizabeth Mitchell) death.  Sawyer also reveals he was planning to propose to her.  Kate asks Sawyer to help her find Claire, but he declines.

At the Temple, Sayid is taken away by Dogen (Hiroyuki Sanada) who electrocutes Sayid and burns him with a hot poker.  When Jack (Matthew Fox) confronts him, Dogen tells Jack that Sayid is infected and gives him a pill to give to Sayid.  Jack ends up swallowing the pill himself when Dogen refuses to tell him the contents of the pill.  Dogen forces Jack to cough the pill up and reveals it's poison and that the same infection that is taking Sayid also took Claire.

In the flash-sideways world, after hijacking the taxi, the driver fled on foot and Kate kicked Claire out of the taxi and took off with her bags.  Kate discovers that she robbed a pregnant woman and returns to find Claire.  Kate offers her a ride and they go to the people Claire was planning on giving her baby to, but the couple has broken up and can no longer take the baby.

Claire starts to go into labor and Kate takes her the hospital.  The doctor, Ethan (William Mapother) helps Claire postpone the delivery when she says she isn't ready.  When the police arrive looking for Kate, Claire covers for her and allows Kate to escape.

What Works:

The best part of this episode is the development for Jack.  Normally, Jack would make a decisions without consulting with anyone and just go for it.  When given the pill by Dogen, Jack doesn't do that.  He sits down with Sayid to discuss their options before confronting Dogen.  Plus, he pulls what might be my favorite Jack move in the entire series by swallowing the pill and calling Dogen's bluff.  Legendary moment for Jack.

Josh Holloway does a terrific job as well.  This is the most broken we have seen or will ever see Sawyer.  The scene where he is crying on the dock is absolutely heartbreaking.  Holloway hands down gives the best performance of the episode.

We also get a couple of characters coming back into the fold.  The obvious one is Claire and this kicks off the hilarious storyline that she has become the new resident crazy lady setting traps in the jungle.  Plus we get the return of Aldo.  I love how angry he is after the events of his first appearance.  Rob McElhenney is great even though his return is short lived thanks to Claire.

What Sucks:

This is a Kate episode and like a lot of Kate episodes, Kate is the least interesting part of the episode.  Every other character that we see in "What Kate Does" has more interesting moments than Kate.  All she really does in this episode is trek through the jungle going after a different character.  We've done this before...a lot.  Her Island story doesn't really add much.

I also don't care for the flash-sideways storyline.  Sure, it's nice to have Claire back, but I've never really been able to buy into that Kate, who is a fugitive, would stop and give Claire a ride and then stick around the hospital.  It makes the story lose any sense of urgency.

Platinum Polar Bear:

The Platinum Polar Bear goes to the most competent character of the episode.  For "What Kate Does," this award goes to Jack for talking through options with Sayid and swallowing the pill to call Dogen's bluff.  This is Jack's 13th time winning this award, which puts him in 1st place.

Verdict:

"What Kate Does" is a decent episode of Lost with a few great moments.  Jack swallowing the pill is amazing, as is Josh Holloway's performance.  Plus I like getting some old characters back.  It's just that both sides of Kate's story don't work as well as the rest of the episode.  And considering that this is a Kate-centric episode, that's a problem.

 7/10: Good
