Scream VI (2023) Review

"You know you're like the tenth guy to try this, right?"
-Gale Weathers

Some of the survivors of the previous movie have moved away from Woodsboro to New York City for a fresh start, but a new Ghostface in the Big Apple is making that difficult.

What Works:

I love the development of the surviving characters from the previous movie.  Both Sam (Melissa Barrera) and Tara (Jenna Ortega) were great in the last movie and continue to be awesome here.  Tara gets more screen-time and Sam is such an interesting character.  I love having this slasher movie protagonist with such a bloodthirsty side.  It's very refreshing.

Both Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) were fun in the last movie, but I felt they were both underutilized.  Scream VI fixes that.  They are both awesome characters and get a ton to do.  I love the closeness between these four characters and the bond they have formed.

The New York setting is perfectly used.  This is what Jason Takes Manhattan should have been.  They really make this Scream its own because of the setting and set-pieces that you can really only pull off in New York.  The bodega sequence, the apartment escape, and the stuff on the subway is all incredible.  I really hope we see more horror sequels lean into their location more.

The opening sequence is fantastic.  The Scream series has always managed to give us new and exciting ways to open a movie.  It embraces the New York setting from the jump and is a lot of fun.

Finally, this Scream probably has the best kills out of the series on average.  There's a few great ones in the series, but a lot of the time they have been simple stabbings.  In Scream VI, they give us gore and it is gruesome.  Plus we get some kills that aren't just stabbings.  They get creative with the blood and guts because the filmmakers know their audience.

What Sucks:

I think some of the new supporting characters could have been better developed.  I had similar problems with the 5th movie.  We get interesting new characters that had a lot of promise because of the actors' performances or the quirks of the character, but they aren't used to their fullest.  I would have liked to spend more time getting to know Quinn (Liana Liberato), Ethan (Jack Champion), and Anika (Devyn Nekoda).

Verdict:

Scream VI is an absolute blast and fits right in with the other great Scream sequels.  It's absolutely on the same level as 2, 4, and 5.  Like those movies, the new characters aren't as well developed as they should have been, but the rest of the movie is awesome.  Great development of the returning characters, a fun setting, a kick-ass opening, and gnarly kills.  This movie has absolutely got it going on.

 9/10: Great
