Community: Season 1, Episode 14 "Interpretive Dance" Review

Image
"Can I just ask as a divorced, black housewife, what part of being a single, white slacker makes you people so jaded?" -Shirley Bennett "Interpretive Dance" picks up with Britta (Gillian Jacobs) noticing a long, brown hair on Jeff's (Joel McHale) jacket and the study group teases him about it.  Jeff eventually reveals that he's been regularly seeing someone, but refuses to say who.  It turns out it's Professor Slater (Lauren Stamile) because Jeff is no longer her student.  The two prepare to get it on in her office, but are interrupted by Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) who quickly kills the mood. Later, Slater and Jeff kiss in the library, but the rest of the group see them.  Jeff comes clean about seeing Slater, but asks them to keep it quiet.  Unfortunately, Pierce (Chevy Chase) immediately starts tweeting about it and the Dean calls a meeting with Jeff and Slater as soon as he hears about it.  During the meeting, Slater says they are boyfriend and girlfrie...

Kraven the Hunter (2024) Review

Image
"She died not long after that, and I never saw her again." -Calypso Ezili Sergai Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) was raised his entire life to take over the criminal empire of his father, Nikolai (Russell Crowe).  However, Sergai rejected this path to live an isolated life as Kraven the Hunter, a man who hunts down and kills bad men.  When Kraven's little brother, Dmitri (Fred Hechinger), gets caught up in a fight between multiple groups of criminals, Kraven has to return to civilization to save his brother and teams up with Calypso (Ariana DeBose), the woman who gave him superpowers to begin with, to hunt down everyone who is after Dmitri. What Works: I think we all expected this movie to be the next Morbius or Madam Web.  I know I did, but this movie has one key element that that those two movies didn't have; a protagonist to root for.  Kraven is far more likable than Morbius or Madam Web ever were.  I was actually able to get invested in this movie because K...

Community: Season 1, Episode 13 "Investigative Journalism" Review

Image
"You're not relaxed.  You're an uptight puppet master and these are all your puppets." -Buddy "Investigative Journalism" picks up with the study group returning from winter break and catching up.  Jeff (Joel McHale) has a brand new attitude and wants to be the laid-back comic relief.  The group eventually notices another student, Buddy (Jack Black), has joined the table and wants to join the study group.  The laid-back Jeff allows it, but Buddy clashes with the rest of the group with some inappropriate comments towards the women, failed humor, and accidentally kicking Jeff in the face.   The study group has a membership meeting and Jeff manipulates the group into voting to reject Buddy from the group.  When they try to let Buddy know, he refuses to leave the study room until Jeff has to drag him out. Meanwhile, the Dean (Jim Rash) resurrects the campus newspaper and asks Jeff to be the editor.  He agrees after he learns he gets his own office and ...

Survivor 47 Finale "The Last Stand" Gameplay Analysis

Image
"No pride on  Survivor !" -Jeff Probst Well, we've completed another season of Survivor!   I would call the finale predictable, but not boring, and I definitely find it satisfying.  Rachel is a fantastic winner and I really enjoyed watching her play, especially the way she owned her game at Final Tribal Council.  I saw it coming from several miles away, but it was still enjoyable to watch.  Plus Sam did a respectable job and I'm glad he got 2nd.  Let's get into who played well and who sucked!  We'll start with the Final 4. Who Played Well: Obviously Rachel won Immunity, which locked in her win.  As soon as she won Immunity, I was supremely confident she was winning.  I also liked her picks of Teeny and Sam for fire-making and I loved all the help she gave Teeny.  It didn't work out the way she wanted it to, but Rachel did all the right things. Sam probably should have done some fire-making practice before coming onto the show....

Community: Season 1, Episode 12 "Comparative Religion" Review

Image
"I'm so sick of the Dean jamming his PC-ness down my throat." -Shirley Bennett "Comparative Religion" picks up Greendale Community College approaching the end of the semester with Winter Break on the horizon.  Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) decides to throw a Christmas party for the study group after their Spanish final.  To get everyone into the Christmas Spirit, she makes the group bracelets that say "WWBJD" (What Would Baby Jesus Do?).  Abed (Danny Pudi) gets into a confrontation with another student, Mike (Anthony Michael Hall), over cookies and Jeff (Joel McHale) steps in to break it up.  Before it can escalate further, the Dean (Jim Rash) arrives at the cafeteria and Mike leaves, but warns that this isn't over. Shirley, a devout Christian, discovers that the rest of her group doesn't have the same beliefs.  Annie (Alison Brie) is Jewish, Abed is Muslim, Troy (Donald Glover) is a Jehovah's Witness, Britta (Gillian Jacobs) is an Atheist...

Survivor 47: Episode 13 "Bob and Weave" Gameplay Analysis

Image
"Put me out of my misery." -Sue Smey This was another great episode of Survivor coming off of an all-timer last week.  I don't think the finale will be able to live up to the Final 6 and 5 eliminations.  There was plenty of suspense and exciting gameplay across both rounds of play in this episode.  Let's get into who played well and who sucked.  This will be broken up into two parts, so we'll start with the Final 6. Who Played Well: Rachel was truly spectacular here.  I loved how she realized that Teeny, Genevieve, Andy, and Sam had been gone for too long and went to spy on them.  She got some really good information, even if the part about Genevieve's Idol turned out to be a lie.  She also managed to save herself with an Idol play when nearly everyone else thought she was dead in the water. Genevieve managed to win Immunity, which probably saved her.  I would bet that Rachel and Sue might have tried to Idol her out if she hadn't won.  ...

Y2K (2024) Review

Image
"You've got mail!" -AOL Voice It's New Years Eve 1999 and moments after the clock strikes midnight, the technology of the world comes to life and begins attacking humanity.  A group of high school students have to work together to try to survive and stop the computers from taking over the world. What Works: So the computer creatures that become the main antagonists of the movie actually look pretty cool.  It's a wide variety of computer monitors and other pieces of technology combined together to form Frankenstein's Monster from the year 2000.  They look great, I just wish they had gotten more to do in the movie so we could see the greatness in action. Finally, I chucked two or three times during this movie, with one of them being a genuine laugh.  One of the idiot characters of the movie gets killed by trying to grind on his rollerblades.  He immediately falls over and breaks his neck.  In the middle of the Y2K apocalypse, this moron dies while being...

Community: Season 1, Episode 11 "The Politics of Human Sexuality" Review

Image
"Don't eat the crab dip!" -Troy Barnes "The Politics of Human Sexuality" picks up with with Annie (Alison Brie) helping the Dean (Jim Rash) set up for Greendale's STD Fair.  Jeff (Joel McHale) feigns interest in the fair when he meets the Dean's new secretary, Sabrina (Sara Erikson), who he flirts with. Pierce (Chevy Chase) tells the group that he has a new girlfriend, Doreen (Sharon Lawrence), who he met in his marketing class.  Pierce asks Jeff to go on a double date with him to the STD Fair and when Jeff declines, Pierce suggests Jeff probably couldn't get a date anyway.  This gets under Jeff's skin and he tries to find a date, but is unsuccessful.  Britta (Gillian Jacobs) suggests that his immature view of women is his problem. At the STD Fair, Jeff meets Pierce and lies, saying that he didn't even try to get a date.  Pierce is sympathetic to Jeff's dry spell, but this bothers Jeff, and with some help from the Dean, he convinces Sabr...

Survivor 47: Episode 12 "Operation: Italy" Gameplay Analysis

Image
"She's gotta sleep with the fishes." -Andy Rueda Wow, this was fun!  I loved everything about this episode.  The editors, the players, and production all had a blast putting this thing together.  I'm always down to see the game get shaken up, and Andy did it in style with Operation: Italy, which is a great name for his plan.  I just really enjoyed the the way Andy, Sam, and Genevieve put this plan together and executed it.  It made for a great episode.  Let's take a look at who played well and who sucked. Who Played Well: Obviously we have to start with Andy, Genevieve, and Sam.  I think Sam started off with a bad move in taking Genevieve on Reward with him.  He already had her on his side.  I think he would have been better off taking Sue, someone who really plays with her emotions.  However, Sam's pick ended up working out for him when Andy pitched Operation: Italy.  They really thought it out and came up with a great plan t...
