Ranking The Lego Movies

With the release of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, I figured now was as good a time as any to do a ranking of the four Lego Movies.  Let me start off by saying I love all four of these films.  All of them are awesome, some are just more awesome than others.  So let's rank them from least awesome to most awesome.

#4. The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017)

This is definitely the black sheep of the Lego series having no connection to the other films and receiving very mixed reviews when compared to the other three films.  Well I agree this is the weakest of the four, I think it's extremely underrated.  It has the same creative energy the other films had, it has the best villain in Justin Theroux's Lord Garmadon, Jackie Chan and Dave Franco are both great, and a it has a live-action cat destroying the city.  It also has the most powerful emotional moment in the series between Lloyd and Garmadon.  Not all of the cast is utilized well and the 3rd act could have been stronger, but this is still a solid movie and deserved better.

 8/10: Really Good

#3. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

The direct sequel captures a lot of the same spirit the original movie had, it's just not quite as fresh and doesn't completely nail the humor.  The film still has an amazing cast, a fun Mad Max parody, a terrifyingly fun brainwashing sequence, a hilarious cameo from big-name actor, and a sweet real-world plot.  It's just that everything this movie does, the original did slightly better.  That said, this movie does give us Rex Dangervest, a combination of all of Chris Pratt's badass characters he's played in the past.

 9/10: Great

#2. The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

This movie barely edges out The Second Part because it feels extremely different from The Lego Movie.  Lego Batman is its own movie and goes a different route and that works almost all of the time.  Will Arnett is my favorite incarnation of Batman, Zach Galifianakis and Michael Cera totally nail their roles, the inclusion of supervillains from other franchises is simply brilliant, I really enjoyed the references to the fact that the Legos are just toys, and the shots at Suicide Squad were hilarious.  The movie does get a little heavy-handed with its message and there are a few too many scenes of Batman being reluctant to let the people he cares about into his life.  We get it, Batman has issues, cut one or two of these scenes out and the effect would be the same.  That said, I still love this movie.

 9/10: Great

#1. The Lego Movie (2014)

Really, could it be anything else?  The Lego Movie is one of those rare films that I consider to be perfect.  It does everything right.  The voice cast is incredible, the message is on-point, the energy in unmatched and just makes you want to be a kid again, the jokes are hysterical, and the reveal about the reality of the Legos is fantastically handled.  This film does everything right and I never get tired of watching it.

 10/10: Amazing

So that's my list!  What do you think?  Did I nail it or get this completely wrong?  Let me know!
