Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) Review

"Be excellent to each other and party on, dudes!"
-Abraham Lincoln

Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are on the verge of failing their history class, which, little do they know, would have devastating effects on the future of humanity.  Rufus (George Carlin) travels back from the future to lend them a time machine so they can pass their history presentation.

What Works:

I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a perfect movie.  It's unbelievably fun and silly.  There is never a dull moment and it's an absolute blast to watch.  I could watch it anytime.

Winter and Reeves are perfect in their roles.  They are impossible to dislike and effortlessly easy to root for.  Do they have a ton of depth?  No, but it doesn't matter.  They get by on their charisma and never-ending optimism.

The supporting characters are all great too.  The odd assortment of historical figures that join in on their adventure are all extremely entertaining.  They all get several moments to shine.  Billy the Kid (Dan Shor) and Socrates (Tony Steedman) have an odd, but awesome, bromance.  Who could have seen that coming?  George Carlin doesn't get as much to do as you might remember, but he shines in every scene he has.

The pacing of the film is impeccable.  The story keeps chugging along and never gets stagnant.  They jump around history with rapid speed and even when we get back to San Dimas it doesn't stop.  Everything at the shopping mall, the police station, and the final presentation is hilarious and so much fun.

What Sucks:

I've got nothing for ya.

Verdict:

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a fun and silly film executed to perfection.  Everyone in the cast is wonderful and the pace is relentlessly entertaining.  Is it the smartest film ever made?  No.  Are their plot-holes galore?  Who cares?  This movie is one of my favorites and is perfect in every way.  It really is an excellent adventure.

 10/10 Excellent
