Kick-Ass (2010) Review

 "Take cover, child!"
-Big Daddy

Nerdy high school student Dave Lizewski (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) decides to become a crime-fighting superhero and calls himself Kick-Ass.  He discovers he is not very good at it and gets mixed up with the mafia and two other superheroes, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloё Grace Moretz), before he realizes just how in over his head he really is.

What Works:

Hands down, the best part of this movie is Chloё Grace Moretz as Hit Girl.  She's definitely one of the greatest superheroes of all time.  She's like 11 years old, but swears like a sailor and has no problem horrifically murdering anyone who gets in her way.  I know a ton of people were offended by this character, but she's actually the best.  She has one of the greatest introductory scenes of all time, where she is repeatedly shot in the chest to test out a bulletproof vest.

Hit Girl's father is no slouch either.  Nicolas Cage is one of my favorite actors and gives a wild performance as Big Daddy.  He has some absolutely bonkers line deliveries and I am here for it.  His scenes with Moretz are definitely the best in the film.  They have awesome chemistry and I could have watched a movie with just the two of them.

I also enjoyed Kick-Ass because he is so lame.  If anyone actually tried fighting crime like a superhero, they would pretty much be Kick-Ass.  He is extremely ineffective and fails at almost everything he tries in the film.  He has exactly one cool moment in the entire movie when he gets to fly a jet pack.  Even his final boss fight with Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) is extremely lame...and I appreciate it.

The music also kicks ass.  During Hit Girl's fight sequences, we get some excellent song choice, but the score is really well done as well, especially when Big Daddy and Kick-Ass are tied up and Hit Girl shows up to save them.

Finally, the action sequences are awesome.  Hit Girl and Big Daddy both get some nice long takes to really show their stuff.  Every time they get to throw fists, it really does kick ass.

What Sucks:

My only real complaint with the movie is that some of the CGI does not look very good, especially in some of the early scenes.  The CGI blood looks very fake at points.

Verdict:

Kick-Ass lives up to it's name with some awesome characters, performances, action, and music.  Apart from some bad CGI, there's a lot to love with this film and it has definitely got it going on.

 9/10: Great
