Lost: Season 5, Episode 4 "The Little Prince" Review

 "Time travel's a bitch."
-James "Sawyer" Ford

"The Little Prince" starts off with a flashback to Jack (Matthew Fox) and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) on the rescue boat.  Kate decides she wants to tell the world Aaron (William Blanchette) is her son.  Jack asks her if she will go along with the lie and she agrees.

In 2007, Kate goes to see the lawyer trying to get a blood sample from her and Aaron, Dan Norton (Tom Irwin), to try and make a deal.  Norton cuts through the B.S. and tells Kate she needs to be prepared to lose custody of Aaron.

Sayid (Naveen Andrews) is attacked by a hitman in the hospital, but manages to subdue him.  He finds Kate's address in his pocket.  Worried, Jack meets up with Kate as she tails Norton to his client.  He meets with Claire's (Emilie de Ravin) mother, Carole Littleton (Susan Duerdon).  Jack tries to explain everything to Carole, but she has no idea what Jack is talking about and doesn't know anything about Aaron.

It's revealed that Norton is also Ben's (Michael Emerson) lawyer and Ben was behind the blood sample request.  Norton provides Ben with evidence that will get Hurley (Jorge Garcia) out of prison.  Ben, Sayid, Jack, and Kate meets at the marina and Kate confronts Ben, who confesses to his role.  It's revealed that Sun (Yunjin Kim) is watching the meeting and has a gun.

Back on the island, Charlotte (Rebecca Mader) reawakens.  Locke (Terry O'Quinn) decides they should all travel to the Orchid to try and stop the flashes and get Locke off the Island to get everyone to come back.  On their way to get the Zodiac from camp, Sawyer (Josh Holloway) witnesses Kate helping Claire give birth to Aaron, which greatly affects him.

Miles' (Ken Leung) nose starts to bleed and Daniel (Jeremy Davies) suggests that the people who have been on the Island the greatest amount of time are being affected first and asks if Miles has ever been to the Island before.

The group finds a pair of outriggers at the beach and take one.  An unknown group chases after them and shoots at them, but they are rescued by a flash.  They make it to shore and Juliet's (Elizabeth Mitchell) nose starts to bleed.

Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) is revealed to be alive and is pulled from the water by some shipwreck survivors.  The next day, one of them introduces herself to Jin as Danielle Rousseau (Melissa Farman).

What Works:

I actually really liked the dynamic between Jack and Kate this time around.  The love triangle between Jack, Kate, and Sawyer is something I've never really had a ton of patience for, but this episode just focuses on Jack and Kate.  They've been through a lot and they do have a nice moment or two together here.

The reveal that Ben is behind Dan Norton is also great.  Of course it's Ben, up to his old tricks.  Plus the fact that he just admits to it as soon as Kate confronts him is simply classic Ben.

Josh Holloway also has a great episode.  We get to see just how affected he actually is by all this stuff and Holloway gives a great performance.  He also manages to be pretty funny during his interactions with Locke and Juliet, plus his angry shouting at the sky when they flash to the middle of a storm is amazing.

Finally, the reveal that Jin was rescued by Danielle Rousseau is hilarious.  I've always loved Jin's expression in the final scene.  He just looks so dumfounded and confused.  I love imagining what is running through his head.  It always cracks me up.

What Sucks:

The big problem with this episode comes from the on-Island storyline.  It doesn't really make much progress.  They decide to start heading for the Orchid and that's about it.  Sometimes it feels like it's spinning its wheels.

The other big thing that happens on the island is the outigger chase and shootout.  This is probably the single most frustrating question I still have about the show.  Who were these people and why did they start shooting?  They had an Ajira bottle, but I've also heard they could be crew from the Black Rock.  This feels like a big mystery and we never go back to it for the rest of the show.  In the grand scheme, I'd rather this sequence be cut out of the show completely.  If there isn't any resolution to this, it ultimately just ends up being filler.

Platinum Polar Bear:

The Platinum Polar Bear goes to the most competent character of the episode.  For "The Little Prince," I'll give the award to Sayid Jarrah for winning the fight against the hitman at the hospital.  This is Sayid's 12th time winning this award, which ties him for 1st place with Jack.

Verdict:

"The Little Prince" is a solid episode of Lost, even if there isn't much forward momentum on the Island and the outrigger mystery is never solved.  The dynamic between Jack and Kate is really interesting, Michael Emerson and Josh Holloway both have some fun moments, and the Danielle Rousseau reveal is great.  This episode has definitely got it going on.

 8/10: Really Good
