A Cure For Wellness (2017) Review

Whoever came up with this movie certainly isn't well.  Demented and sick most likely.

A Cure For Wellness follows the story of young financial executive, Lockhart (Dane DeHaan), who is sent to the Swiss Alps by his boss.  The CEO of the company has gone of vacation to a wellness center up in the mountains and he's decided not to come back.  Lockhart's mission is bring the CEO back.  Lockhart finds the employees of the center unhelpful in his quest, and soon after his arrival he gets into a bad car accident.  With a broken leg, Lockhart is now stuck in the strange wellness center, run by the mysterious Dr. Heinrich Volmer (Jason Isaacs), who prevents him from seeing the CEO.  Strange incidents begin to happen around Lockhart and it's becoming harder and harder for him to tell if he's losing his mind or if something sinister is happening at the wellness center.

What Works:

This movie is absolutely beautiful.  The cinematography is amazing, the set decoration is incredible, and the setting of the Swiss Alps is stunning.  Director Gore Verbinski's (Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3) use of color is spectacular and he creates some really visceral visual storytelling.  A Cure For Wellness is simply...art.

Another plus for this film is the atmosphere.  It excels at building tension and you can really feel a sense of dread.  You know something awful is happening at this center, but you don't know what, and you can't help feeling that the truth is worse than you can possibly imagine.

Finally, A Cure For Wellness is legitimately creepy.  There are some sequences that are genuinely horrific and haunting.  Two words: nightmare fuel.

What Sucks:

I have one complaint with this movie.  There is one sequence where Lockhart escapes the center to the nearby village and reaches the police chief.  He tries to tell him what's happening, but in a very clichéd turn of events, the police chief is in on everything and calls the center's staff down to the station, where they try the old "you're actually insane" trick.  It's something we've seen many times before and could be cut out of the film and it would actually improve it.

Verdict:

A Cure For Wellness is a legitimately creepy.  It's vey underrated and was unfairly overlooked by audiences.  But this movies is great and will most likely give you nightmares.  And it truly is a beautiful movie.  Any film buff will at least appreciate the look of the movie.  But if you like horror films, I implore you to give this one a chance.

 9/10: Great!
