Wreck-It Ralph (2012) Review

Hey, Fix-It Felix, can you fix this movie?  Hit Sarah Silverman's character with your hammer.  That'll do it.

The hero of Wreck-It Ralph is the villain of the arcade game, Fix-It Felix.  Ralph (John C. Reilly) is tired of being treated like a bad guy all the time.  Every game, Ralph is unceremoniously thrown off of  a building, while the hero, Felix (Jack McBrayer) gets parties and metals.  After not being invited to the games 30th anniversary party, Ralph makes a deal with one of the characters Felix always saves, if Ralph can get a medal somehow, they will let him into the penthouse of the building.  Ralph sneaks into new first-person-shooter arcade, Hero's Duty, and manages to get a medal.  During his escape, Ralph lands in kart-racing game, Sugar Rush, where Vanellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a glitch in the game, steals his medal, so she can enter the race to try and become a playable character.  Ralph and Vanellope are forced to team up against the villainous King Candy (Alan Tudyk), so they can both achieve their goals.

But, when Ralph crashed in Sugar Rush, he accidentally brought a Cy-Bug, a monster from Hero's Duty with him.  The Cy-Bug begins to multiply, threatening to destroy Sugar Rush.  Felix teams up with Sergeant Calhoun (Jane Lynch), from Hero's Duty, to stop the Cy-Bugs and get Ralph back to his game, before Fix-It Felix is unplugged...permanently.

What Works:

As a lover of video games, the setting of Wreck-It Ralph really speaks to my inner nerd.  I love all of the video game references and jokes, and the world of the arcade is really cool.  It's something I would love to see more of and I am really interested in the potential of a sequel.  Getting to see all of the different video game worlds is simply awesome.

John C. Reilly gives a fantastic performances as Ralph.  He is a really sympathetic character, and we get his motivation and we are rooting for him to succeed.  But he isn't the only great performance.  Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, and Alan Tudyk are used perfectly and really add some great moments to the film.

Finally, the utter creativity and the sense of joy I got from the creators in making this film is very refreshing.  This movie is insane, and fun, and I love seeing a movie where the filmmakers can go all out with their ideas.  It doesn't get to happen nearly enough these days.

What Sucks:

I have but one complaint with this movie...Sarah Silverman's Vanellope Von Schweetz.  Holy crap, she is obnoxious.  Right off the bat, even Ralph calls her annoying, which is an understatement.  Later, when we see her being bullied by the Sugar Rush racers, I was starting to feel bad for her and understand why she was being such a jerk, but after that she immediately reverts back to being annoying and that doesn't change for the rest of the movie.  Any sympathy I had for her quickly evaporated.  For a character we're supposed to like and root for, the filmmakers sure made it hard to do so.

Verdict:

Even with the annoying supporting character, Wreck-It Ralph still has it going on.  It's a lot of fun, and anyone who loves video games will appreciate this movie, and even those who aren't gamers will still enjoy it.  I don't know why it took me so long to finally see this one, but I waited far too long.  Don't make my mistake.

 9/10: Great!
