Ranking the Ocean's Movies

Well, I have finally gotten around to watching all of the Ocean's films, including the Rat Pack original.  But how do they stack up when compared to one another?  Let's find out.

#5. Ocean's Twelve (2004)

Coming in dead last is Ocean's Twelve and it's not close.  This movie fails on almost level and it's one my least favorite sequels ever.  I do like the chemistry between the cast and the sequence outside the museum where most of the team gets arrested, but apart from that, this film has no redeeming qualities.  The film is overly complex and confusing, making it virtually impossible to follow, there are sequences that are drawn out for too long just to show each member of Ocean's team doing the exact same things, the way some scenes are shot is just bizarre in an uninteresting way, and the 3rd act plot twist is, simply put, stupid, and renders the last half of the movie a complete waste of time.

 2/10: Awful

#4. Ocean's 11 (1960)

One of the rare instances where the remake is better than the original, the leads of this movie have solid chemistry, Frank Sinatra is great, the heist sequence is visual interesting, and we get deeper into the characters' motivation, which I'm a fan of.  But the scenes of the crew prepping for the heist are all pretty boring, the 3rd act is unnecessarily long, there are too many singing scenes, and the minor characters are underdeveloped.  Plus, a few of the subplots don't ever go anywhere.  It's a watchable movie, but nothing special.

 6/10: Okay

#3. Ocean's 8 (2018)

Ocean's 8 has a solid cast with great chemistry, a great heist sequence, and the last minute addition of James Corden to the plot actually works.  But, the 3rd act revelation is clumsy and not very interesting, it felt like scenes of character development were cut out which made the narrative not as interesting, and the film fails to do anything different.  It's a soft reboot that does nothing new.  It's perfectly watchable, but very flawed.

 6/10: Okay

#2. Ocean's 13 (2007)

13 starts off strong by giving us the best antagonist of the series in Willy Bank.  He is easy to hate and someone who really deserves to be taken down.  This also gives us the best motivation any of the characters have had for taking part in the heist.  The heist itself is really well done and manages to be both complex and coherent at the same time.  It's also the funniest of the series.  The addition of Bobby Caldwell was unnecessary and felt like a retread of Ocean's 12, but this movie is a fantastic sequel and was very close to the number one spot.

 9/10: Great

#1. Ocean's Eleven (2001)

But let's be real: was there ever another choice?  Ocean's Eleven is one of my all time favorite movies.  It has a fantastic cast with amazing chemistry.  Each member of the eleven brings something to the table.  The prep scenes and the heist itself are both awesome and the movie as a whole is the definition of slick.  This movie works on every level and I can only give it my highest recommendation.

 10/10: Amazing

So, what do you think?  Am I dead wrong or did I nail it?
