Ranking The Purge Movies

Well, I just saw The First Purge and have now seen all four Purge movies, so this seems like as good a time as any to do a ranking The Purge films.  Just remember all the good the Purge does as we rank these movies!

#4. The Purge (2013)

The Purge is an odd film series in that the original film is the worst one and it isn't close.  The original film wastes a cool concept by having the entire movie take place inside of a house with mostly unlikable and useless characters who make very poor decisions.  Ethan Hawke does a decent job, but the original Purge doesn't do anything with an awesome concept.

 2/10: Terrible

#3. The First Purge (2018)

Boy, is it going to be difficult to distinguish between this movie and the original.  When I'm talking about the first Purge, do I mean this movie or the original?  Anyway, The First Purge is nothing special and doesn't really do anything new, and the stuff it does do right, Anarchy and Election Year both did better.  Dmitri is a solid protagonist, the 3rd act is well done, and Skeletor is a creepy villain, but making this movie a prequel and giving us a hopeful ending makes no sense when we know the Purge is going to continue for decades to come.  Someone didn't think that ending through.

 4/10: Nothing Special

#2. The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

I really had a tough time ranking these last two.  I really liked both of them and both execute well on their premise and give us a great lead character in Leo Barnes.  I think Anarchy had higher highs than Election Year, but lower lows.  It has probably the best Purge sequences and is a really fun movie to watch, but most of the supporting characters are annoying and useless forcing Barnes to be a babysitter to a bunch of ungrateful people who don't deserve his help.  If it wasn't for their whiny behavior, Anarchy would probably win.

 8/10: Really Good

#1: The Purge: Election Year (2016)

But, there can only be on winner; and for me, it's Election Year.  I think this one has the best story as there is more at stake than just a few random people's lives.  The main characters are trying to stop the Purge for good and this is easily the story I was invested in the most.  We have some great Purge sequences, great characters, and Kimmi and her gang, which might be my favorite group of killers in the series.  I love their cars especially.  While I don't care for the way Barnes and Joe argue with each other in the deli scenes, I love the rest of this film.  It does almost everything right and is an absolute blast to watch.

 9/10: Great
