Nobody (2021) Review

"Give me the goddamn kitty-cat bracelet!"
-Hutch Mansell

Former assassin, Hutch Mansell (Bob Odenkirk) is living a dull and repetitive life with his family.  After his house is robbed and he chooses not to intervene, Hutch caves to his thirst for action and ends up beating up the brother of a dangerous Russian mobster, Yulian Kuznetsov (Aleksei Serebryakov), who comes after Hutch with a vengeance.

There will be spoilers below.  They managed to leave some of the best parts of this movie out of the trailer and they are a lot of fun.  If you like action movies, go and watch Nobody and then come back and read this review.  SPOILER ALERT!

What Works:

Bob Odenkirk is awesome as an action hero.  I thought watching Saul as an action hero would be fun, but I wasn't sure it would be believable.  I was wrong.  Odenkirk is fantastic, easy to root for, and is obviously having a blast.  One thing I really appreciate also separates him from other action heroes like Daniel Craig's James Bond or John Wick.  Those characters seem to want out of their lives and to get away from the violence, whereas Hutch is the opposite.  He craves the violence and is chomping at the bit for someone to try and fight him.  That makes for an exciting character.

The action sequences are phenomenal.  They're well shot and exciting.  Hutch is an older guy, he's not Superman, so there is tension in these scenes as Hutch does get injured.  While all of the sequences are great, my favorite is the fight on the bus.  It's brutal and goes on for a surprisingly long time.  There were two separate instances where I fought the fight was over, but the characters kept getting back up and escalating things.

Another standout is the car chase.  Car chases aren't always the most engaging, but this one had a lot of variety and was never generic.  The movie makes it even better by having "Heartbreaker" by Pat Benatar playing over it.  It works perfectly.

Finally, Christopher Lloyd has his best role in years as Hutch's father, David.  I was expecting him to be the comic relief and to spend the entire movie at his nursing home.  Nope!  As soon as David pulls his guns on some goons, I knew I was in for a treat.  Watching Doc Brown kill a bunch of henchmen really put a smile on my face.

What Sucks:

The exposition is a bit on the clunky side.  Hutch likes to give his backstory to dying henchmen who kick the bucket in the middle of his spiel.  It's a little bit forced.  Other times, we don't get enough exposition on some of the relationships and connections between characters.  The exposition needed to be better balanced.

Verdict:

I expected Nobody to be good, but it exceeded my expectations.  Bob Odenkirk and Christopher Lloyd are fantastic and the action sequences kick ass.  Clunky exposition aside, I had a blast at this film and it has definitely got it going on.

 9/10: Great
