The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) Review

 "I'm a Goofy Goober, yeah!"
-SpongeBob SquarePants

When Plankton (Mr. Lawrence) steals the crown of King Neptune (Jeffrey Tambor) and frames the theft on Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), it's up to SpongeBob (Tom Kenny) and Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) to go on an epic journey to find the crown, clear Mr. Krabs' name, and stop Plankton's evil plan to take over Bikini Bottom.

What Works:

If you're a fan of the original SpongeBob cartoon, you will be a huge fan of this movie.  It does a great job of capturing the spirit of the show with plenty of hilarious moments.  The stakes are dialed up to 11, but beyond that it is SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie.  You couldn't ask for much more.

This movie has a bunch of live action segments that are some of the highlights of the film.  We get an opening sequence with a group of pirates on their way to see The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and they sing the show's theme song.  We also get SpongeBob and Patrick being captured by a scuba diver and taken to a gift shop, which is one of the best sequences of the movie.

Best of all is the cameo by David Hasselhoff, which is one of the greatest cameos of all time.  Hasselhoff gives a hilarious performance and we get a fight scene on his back as he makes his way to Bikini Bottom.  It's absolutely glorious.

To go back to the scenes in the gift shop, this movie gets surprisingly emotional with the apparent deaths of SpongeBob and Patrick.  It's actually a pretty powerful moment as they dry up singing the Goofy Goober song.  I wasn't expecting to feel so much in a SpongeBob SquarePants movie.

Finally, SpongeBob's rock version of the Goofy Goober song at the end of the film has been stuck in my head since 2004.  It's an incredible sequence and an epic way to end the film.  It has claymation, musical magic, and Patrick dressed in fishnets.  Is there a better way to wrap up a film?

What Sucks:

It is a bit disappointing that some of the supporting characters get so little screen-time.  SpongeBob and Patrick are not the only great characters on the show.  Mr. Krabs is frozen for most of the movie, but it's at least important to the plot.  Squidward doesn't get nearly enough to do and Sandy has only two lines in the whole movie.  I wish more time had been given to them.

Verdict:

As far as big-screen adaptations go, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is one of the best.  It perfectly captures the spirit of the show, has plenty of hilarious and iconic moments, and some real emotion.  It also has one of the greatest cameos of all time, I just wish the supporting characters from the show had more to do.  These Goofy Goobers have definitely got it going on.

 9/10: Great
