Ranking of the Leprechaun Movies

I've just watched the latest film in the Leprechaun series, Leprechaun Returns, so it seemed appropriate to do an update of my rankings.  I hate most of these movies, but did Returns end up being the first film in the series I can actually recommend or is it the worst of the bunch?  Let's find out!

We'll do this from best to worst to keep it interesting.

#1. Leprechaun Returns (2018)

They did it.  They actually did it.  Returns is easily the best movie in this series and I actually liked the film.  It has a solid main protagonist, by far the best gore, and some legitimately good acting from Mark Holton in a return from the original movie,  The supporting characters still suck and Leprechaun himself is still intolerable, but I would definitely recommend this movie.

 7/10: Good

#2: Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood (2003)

Like the 5th film in the series, Back 2 that Hood features the Leprechaun hunting for his gold in the hood.  I still can't recommend this movie, but it does have some legitimately funny moments and the characters are actually pretty competent, even if the acting sucks.  It also looks like a movie and doesn't feel as cheap as the first five.

 5/10: Meh

#3: Leprechaun 3 (1995)

The best thing I can say about Leprechaun 3 is that it has a solid setting.  The film takes place in Las Vegas, which leads to a few fun moments, plus there a few cool kills.  The lead character is also a pretty likable guy.

 4/10: Bad

#4: Leprechaun in the Hood (2000)

Leprechaun in the Hood features the Leprechaun hunting down some aspiring rappers.  It has not only the best acting in the series, but the best protagonist, played by Anthony Montgomery.  Plus it also has a decent story.  But the kills are lame, the budget may be at its lowest, the humor is horrendous, and the editing is nonsensical.  It's a shame, because this movie actually had potential.

 3/10: Really Bad

#5: Leprechaun 4: In Space (1997)

This movie is basically just a parody of Alien and Aliens.  It features the Leprechaun kidnapping an alien princess to marry her and take over her planet, but a group of space marines get in the way.  It's not a good as it sounds.  The sets and the practical effects look great.  But everything else is just awful.

 3/10: Really Bad

#6: Leprechaun 2 (1994)

Leprechaun 2 has a few decent kills and mildly creepy plot, but the characters are stupid and the budget is low.  I can honestly barely remember this one, but it was bad.

 3/10: Really Bad

#7: Leprechaun Origins (2014)

This is one of the most unnecessary movies ever made.  Origins is the only movie in the series to be strictly a horror film.  There is no comedy whatsoever.  I'm ok with that.  I was hoping we would get a darker version of the Leprechaun.  The occasional mean-spirited one liner, but much more brutal with the kills.  But it turns out, this isn't even really a Leprechaun movie.  He doesn't talk.  It's a creature feature.  The Leprechaun looks like one of the monsters from The Descent, but less impressive.  It acts like a combination of a Predator and a velociraptor.  It's generic as hell and I'm baffled as to why this exists.  The characters are at least competent for the first half of the movie, but that's all the praise I can give it.

 2/10: Terrible

#8: Leprechaun (1993)

I hate this movie.  It's Jennifer Anniston's first film not even she can save it.  It's not scary enough to be a horror movie.  It's not funny enough to be comedy.  The characters are awful.  The kills suck.  It comes off as dull and stupid and it somehow makes North Dakota look worse than it actually is.

 2/10: Terrible

That's it.  I'm done.  I'm going to go burn these DVDs.  You'll get more entertainment from reading a box of Lucky Charms than from watching these movies.  Just watch Returns and forget the rest.
