Unsane (2018) Review

"I must be insane."
- Sawyer Valentini

Sawyer Valentini (Claire Foy) has just moved from Boston to Pennsylvania to escape from her stalker, David Strine (Joshua Leonard).  But Sawyer still sees David everywhere she goes.  Rationally, she knows it can't be him, but she stills sees him everywhere.  When she goes to a councilor for support, she ends up committed in a mental institution, and they won't let her leave.  Things become more insane when she discovers David is an employee of the institution.  Sawyer begins questioning her own sanity.  Is she really crazy, or is there some sort of conspiracy to keep her locked up?  And is that really David?

What Works:

This movie is a nightmarish work of art.  Being locked up against your free will.  Having to questions your own sanity.  Being trapped with someone you are terrified of, who is obsessed with you.  I don't think I'll ever sleep again.

But not only is the story terrifying, but the way the story is presented to us is as well.  The editing and the cinematography are incredible in this movie.  It makes you feel like you are going crazy and it really makes you question Sawyer's sanity as well.  It's great that a movie like this actually got made.  It really is impressive.

The performances are also great, not just from Claire Foy, but from everyone else as well.  The biggest standouts are Jay Pharaoh, who plays another patient, and Amy Irving, who plays Sawyer's mother.  They are fantastic supporting actors and add a lot to the film.

There is also a celebrity cameo that is incredible.  It's unexpected, but it's a great character.

What Sucks:

I got nothing for ya.

Verdict:

Unsane is my favorite movie that I've seen so far this year.  I'm going to have nightmares for weeks and I love it.  It's a technical masterpiece for what it was trying to do.  The story is legitimately scary. The acting is great.  The whole movie is top notch.  I can't recommend it enough.  Unsane has got it going on.

 10/10: Nightmarishly Amazing
