Cabin Fever (2016) Review
"Freakin' hillbilly vampires."
-Paul
This remake of the 2002 film has basically the exact same movie beat-for-beat. A group of friends go camping at a cabin in the woods when a sick man (Randy Schulman) shows up begging for help, but the friends accidentally set him on fire. As the others start getting sick with the flesh-eating disease, the friends have to find help before they all succumb to the illness.
What Works:
Like the first film, the gore in Cabin Fever is top notch and really over the top. It doesn't really happen much until the end of the film, but then we get plenty of it. It looks great and is really gnarly.
I don't have much else to say here. On a technical level, the film is at least competent and they did cut one really awful part out of the original. This time, Paul (Samuel Davis) doesn't molest Karen (Gage Golightly). Everything sexual that happens between them is consensual, so at least the protagonist isn't a complete pile of garbage this time around.
What Sucks:
The biggest problem this movie has is it doesn't do anything to differentiate itself from the original film. It's 98% the exact same movie. The characters don't make super offensive jokes and they are obsessed with their phones and video games. Also, Deputy Winston is female this time, played by Louise Linton. Other than that, it's the same movie. I have no idea why it exists. Why remake a movie if you're just going to do the exact same thing?
Once again, the characters are all stupid and make terrible decisions. Like the last film, they touch Karen far too often after they learn she has been infected. Once again, Jeff (Matthew Daddario) refuses to help and ditches the group. The others get mad at him, but he is the smart one. The lack of common sense drags the film down.
Like in the original, the characters spend way too long trying to get the truck fixed. They honestly could have walked to town from the get go and it would have been quicker. A lot of the decisions simply don't make sense.
Verdict:
The remake of Cabin Fever fixes a few problems from the original and has some solid gore, but it's way too faithful to the original to justify its existence and the characters simply make terrible decisions. It's not at all fun to watch if you've seen the original and is a complete waste of time.
2/10: Awful
