South Park: Season 22 Episode 5 "The Scoots" Review

"I just hope the future isn't scootin'."
-Mr. Mackey

Episode 5 of Season 22 of South Park is a spooktacular Halloween episode.  The town has mysterious been infested with e-scooters, which cause chaos on the roads.  Mr. Mackey quickly becomes fed up with the scooters and throws them all off of a cliff, but they return the next day.  The kids of South Park all decide to use the scooters to trick-or-treat more quickly, but everyone else has the same idea.  South Park faces more trick-or-treaters than they can possibly handle leading to a shortage of candy as everyone tries to stock up so their houses won't get egged.

Because he doesn't have a phone, Kenny isn't invited to trick-or-treat with any of the others.  You have to have a phone to use the e-scooters and no one wants Kenny slowing them down.  Depressed, Kenny goes to Mr. Mackey for guidance and the two of them decide to team up to knock out the cell phone tower, which will shut down the e-scooters and force Halloween back to normal.  The two of them take out the tower just before the entire town is overrun and save Halloween...for now.

What Works:

I love Halloween.  It's my favorite day of the year and I always get excited when shows like South Park do a Halloween special.  "The Scoots" doesn't disappoint at all and it gets the Halloween tone perfectly with a silly and spooky topic in the form of the e-scooters.  It's just such an unexpected thing to make the center of a Halloween episode, but I love it.  It reminds me of the episode where Mr. Stotch becomes convinced drones are all flying themselves, only this was much better handled.

Mr. Mackey is one of the best South Park characters and making him one of the leads of this episode was brilliant.  I love the sequences where we see a silhouette of Mackey going around town and taking all of the scooters and dropping them off a cliff.  The animation is just absurd and I couldn't stop laughing.

The storyline surrounding the kids reminded me of classic South Park.  This was just kids being kids and trying to collect as much Halloween candy as possible.  That's a classic story and South Park puts a great twist on it.  Plus we got to see Kenny as one of the main characters and I can't remember the last time that happened.  You really feel bad for him in this episode and I like the moment between him and Mackey on their way to the radio tower.

The Halloween chaos was amazing.  Watching people on scooters get hit by Mackey and the general insanity of the waves of trick-or-treaters rampaging around town was a lot of fun and we got a sprinkle of Randy Marsh as well, which is never a bad thing.

I also liked a couple of the smaller references.  It was fun having Lolly, the owner of the candy shop, back.  We haven't seen him since season 6, so that was a fun reference.  I also liked the stuff with the security guard dressed as Jason Voorhees.  As a fan of the Friday the 13th movies, I liked the reference to the second film in that series about the counselor talking down Jason.

What Sucks:

I got nothing for ya.

Verdict:

"The Scoots" is my favorite episode of the season so far.  It feels like a classic episode of South Park, it was funny, it had some sweet moments, Mr. Mackey and Kenny shined, and the Halloween spirit was there.  I have no problems with this episode and it has definitely got it going on.

 10/10: Amazing
