Lost: Season 2, Episode 5 :...And Found" Review

"I'm not lost anymore."
-John Locke

Season 2, episode 5 of Lost follows Sun Kwon (Yunjin Kim) as she loses her wedding ring.  She searches frantically for it and gets help from Jack (Matthew Fox), Hurley (Jorge Garcia), and Locke (Terry O'Quinn), but is still unable to find it.  When Kate (Evangeline Lilly) tries to comfort her, Sun shows her the bottle with the messages from the raft that suggests something has gone wrong with the raft.  In the process of digging up the bottle, Sun finds her ring.

On the other side of the island, Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez) starts organizing the group to hike to the main camp.  When Michael (Harold Perrineau) gets a direction on where the Others might be, he takes off into the jungle.  Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) go after him.  They have a close encounter with the Others, but hide from them.  Jin also stumbles across the body of a man called Goodwin (Brett Cullen).  They finally catch up to Michael and convince him to abandon his quest to find Walt (Malcolm David Kelley) for now.

In flashbacks, we see Sun being set up by a matchmaker with Jae Lee (Tony Lee), the owner of the Seoul Gateway Hotel, where Jin works as a doorman.  Sun likes Jae, but discovers he is already engaged to a woman in America and is planning on moving there, but hasn't told his family yet.  Upset, Sun leaves.  Jin quits his job due to classist remarks made by his boss.  The two meet for the first time when they accidentally bump into each other.

What Works:

The scene where Jin and Mr. Eko see the feet of the Others is chilling.  The fear Mr. Eko shows makes it extra terrifying.  He's a big, strong guy.  If he's scared, than the Others are a formidable opponent.  It's a great scene that helps build up the sinister reputation of the Others.

Sun has two great scenes in this episode.  The first is with Hurley and it's absolutely hilarious.  We haven't seen these two interact much and I wish we had.  Hurley's attempts at making conversation are priceless and a really great moment.

Finally, I really like the scene between Sun and Locke.  When Sun has a meltdown and rips apart her garden, Locke is the one to sit and talk with her.  I love his story about no longer searching for things and then finding them.  I can certainly relate.

What Sucks:

This is one of my least favorite episodes of Lost and I don't find any of the three stories very interesting.  Who cares if Sun lost her wedding ring?  We have a hatch and Others to worry about.  This story is simply filler and uninteresting filler at that.

The flashback story isn't great either and adds little to the show.  Sun and Jin are at their best when they are used together and we only have one scene with them together here.  It's a bit of a dull story for how these two met.

The search for Michael isn't as good as it could have been.  The dialogue between Jin and Mr. Eko never really works for me.  Mr Eko's attempts at communicating with Jin seem lazy and I don't like how Jin magically understands him after repeating himself once.

Finally, Ana Lucia sucks and, so far, she has no redeeming qualities.

Platinum Polar Bear:

This award goes to the most useful character in a given episode.  For "...And Found", the award goes to Mr. Eko for being the one to track down Michael and for saving Jin from the Others.  This is his first time winning the award.

Verdict:

"...And Found" is my least favorite episode in the series up to this point and it's mostly a dull affair.  There are three really good scenes with the Others, Hurley, and Locke, but all three stories are boring and don't really add anything to show.

 5/10: Meh
