A Quiet Place (2018) Review

"Too noisy."
(Signing)
-Lee Abbott

A Quiet Place follows the Abbott Family as they try to survive in a world where most of the human population has been killed by dangerous creatures that hunt by sound.  If you make a noise, they will come for you.  Regan Abbott is deaf, so the family can communicate with sign language, which is why they've survived for as long as they have.  But when a freak accident makes a loud noise, the creatures come hunting, and it will take everything the Abbott's have to survive.

What Works:

The biggest praise I can give A Quiet Place is the film's pacing.  It flies by and there is almost always something really engaging.  Once the film gets into the second act, it doesn't let up.  The danger and the fear never goes away, which makes the movie really engaging, leaving you constantly on the edge of your seat.

The acting is also excellent, especially because there is barely any dialogue in this film.  Most of it is delivered through Sign Language.  It's a really interesting film because of this, and the acting is phenominal considering the actors usually aren't speaking.

I have to give major props to John Krasinski.  Not only is he one of the stars of this film, he also directed and wrote it.  He does a great job all around and really brings the film to life.

Finally, I have to say, this has to be the scariest PG-13 horror movie I have ever seen.  I didn't even realize it was PG-13 until after I saw the movie, which surprised me.  It's legitimately scary and the creature design is awesome.

What Sucks:

I have a few very minor nitpicks.  It has one or two unnecessary jump-scares, but it's much more constrained than your typical American-horror film.  There are also a couple of moments where I question the decisions some of the characters make.  Now, every time one of these moments happen, it leads us to a phenomenal sequence, so I'm not going to complain too much.

Verdict:

A Quiet Place is one of the best horror films in recent memory and it's minor flaws are easy to give a pass to because the rest of the movie is just so damn good.  Do yourself a favor, believe the hype and go check this film out, because A Quiet Place has got it going on.

 10/10: Outstanding
