Truth or Dare (2018) Review

I know Truth or Dare looks like the dumbest movie ever, and I shouldn't want to see it.  But I can't resist a movie with such a schlocky premise.  This kind of movie is right up my alley, but does Truth or Dare actually have it going on?

While on Spring Break in Mexico, Olivia (Lucy Hale) and her friends are brought out to an abandoned mission by Carter (Landon Liboiron) who convinces everyone to start playing truth or dare.  Carter later reveals that they have to answer the truth or do the dare, otherwise they die.  Carter flees and Olivia and her friends return home.  But they quickly realize the game has followed them home.  As the group starts to die one-by-one, Olivia and her friends have to find out how to beat the game before it's their turn again.

What Works:

As dumb as it sounds, I love the premise of this movie.  It's just so schlocky and ridiculous.  As soon as I heard about Truth or Dare I was on-board.  And there are definitely some goofy and fun moments to be had.  Some of it works.  And the characters commit enough to this craziness that I was entertained.  It reminded me a lot of the Final Destination films, which I also guiltily enjoy.

I also really liked Nolan Gerald Funk's performance as Tyson.  The guy is an unapologetic, raging asshole.  He was super blunt with his opinions throughout the entire movie, and I loved it.  All this guy needed was more screen-time.

My final point of praise is the ending.  I won't spoil it here, but it is simultaneously the best ending this movie could have and the dumbest.  I can't believe they actually went with that ending, but I'm glad they did.

What Sucks:

Unfortunately, Truth or Dare does not delve deep enough into the schlock.  It plays it too safe.  Most of the kills are pretty lame.  It's a lot of gunshots, or they happen just off-screen.  There's barely any gore.  In fact, I'd say there was only one good kill in the whole movie.  It's really a shame this movie is rated PG-13.  They could have done a ton of awesome stuff with the kills if we had an R-rated amount of gore.  This is the only real problem I have with Truth or Dare, but it's a big one.

Verdict:

Truth or Dare could have been an awesome schlock-fest of a movie, but it failed because it didn't lean in to the insanity enough, due to the PG-13 rating.  It's a massive flaw, so big that it prevents me from giving this movie a recommendation.  It's better than most people would expect, but still, apart from the last two minutes, and one solid kill, there's nothing special here.

 5/10: Meh
