Deadpool 2 (2018) Review

"I'm Batman!"
-Deadpool

This is the part where I would normally get into what the movie all about.  Unfortunately, I can't really do that without giving away major spoilers.  So, a quick spoiler-free review, if you liked the first Deadpool, you will like this one, so go see it, enjoy, then come back and read my review.  My opinions are awesome.  It'll be worth it.  But don't read any further unless you've seen the movie or you are one of those weird people who doesn't mind getting spoiled on stuff.  YOU''VE BEEN WARNED!

Deadpool 2 continues the epic adventures of the wise-cracking mercenary, Wade Wilson, AKA Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds).  One of Wade's targets escapes and comes back for revenge, which results in the death of his fiancée, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).  Unable to commit suicide due to his mutant abilities, Wade goes off a strange series of adventures, including joining the X-Men, going to prison, and starting his own superhero team, X-Force.  Along the way, he becomes attached to a troubled mutant youth, Russell Collins, AKA Firefist (Julian Dennison), who has some serious rage issues and is target for death by a time-traveling, cybernetic soldier, Cable (Josh Brolin).  Wade has to stop trying to die long enough to protect Russell from himself...and Cable.

What Works:

Deadpool 2 surpasses the original as the funniest superhero movie ever made.  Almost every joke lands, the references to other movies, superhero or otherwise, are off the hook.  It's hilarious through-and-through and has a ton of amazing moment.  My favorite being the near instantaneous deaths of most of the G-Force members.  Plus the references to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Green Lantern, The Goonies, and Avengers: Infinity War are incredible.  And as a huge James Bond fan, the Bond song opening was one of the greatest things I have ever seen.

That said, Deadpool 2 doesn't shy away from the emotions either.  Vanessa's death is shocking and heartbreaking, with Ryan Reynolds really giving it his all.  They poke fun at the dark, emotional moments, but that doesn't stop the moving from actually making you feel things.  Plus Russell's backstory with the Mutant Rehabilitation Center is really messed up.

Finally, the performances are all around amazing.  Reynolds is fantastic as Deadpool.  He was born to play this role.  Josh Brolin is excellent as Cable.  He doesn't get much to do in the first half of the movie, but he really comes to life by the end.  All of the X-Men and X-Force members are great, both new and old.  They are all a ton of fun.  Plus Karan Soni, who plays the taxi driver, Dopinder, gets more screen-time and he is excellent, with his murderous tendencies coming to the forefront.

What Sucks:

The story feels pretty unfocused for a lot of the movie.  They crammed a lot into Deadpool 2 and it all comes together by the end, but for a good chunk, it just feels like a bunch of random crap happening.

This is probably just me, I don't have a great ear hearing through accents, so I had some trouble understanding some of Julian Dennison's dialogue.  He has a very thick New Zealand accents.  Most people will probably be fine as I'm the only person that I know of who has had a problem with his accent.  Like I said, it's probably just me.

Verdict:

Deadpool 2 is the funniest superhero movie ever made.  It has a ton of amazing moments and a surprising amount of heart.  The cast gives it their all, and even though it does feel unfocused at times, it all comes together by the end.  Deadpool 2 is a worthy sequel and has definelty got it going on.

 9/10: Great
