Fargo: Season 2 Episode 6 "Rhinoceros" Review

"Out of my way, tool of the state!"
-Karl Weathers

The 6th episode of season 2 of Fargo picks up with Ed Blumquist (Jesse Plemons) being arrested and taken to jail by Lou Solverson (Patrick Wilson).  Lou's attempts to question Ed don't get anywhere, and when Ed asks for a lawyer, he gets the only one in Luverne, Karl Weathers (Nick Offerman), who happens to be drunk.

Meanwhile, the Gerhardt's get word that Charlie (Allan Dobrescu) has been arrested.  Dodd (Jeffery Donovan), Bear (Angus Sampson), and Hanzee Dent (Zahn McClarnon) lead a small army down to Luverne.  Simone Gerhardt (Rachel Keller) informs Mike Milligan (Bokeem Woodbine) that most of Gerhardt's are gone, in the hopes that Mike will kill her abusive father, Dodd.  Instead, Mike and the Kansas City Mafia seize the opportunity and launch a raid on the Gerhardt compound.

Sheriff Hank Larsson (Ted Danson) goes to the Blumquist house to question Peggy (Kirsten Dunst), but they are interrupted by Dodd.  Hank is knocked out, but Peggy manages to outsmart Dodd and his men and take them all out.

Bear, Hanzee, and the rest of their men arrive at the police station and threaten to come in shooting if they aren't given Charlie and Ed.  Karl, acting as Charlie's lawyer, manages to convince Bear and his men to retreat, as it's the best thing they can do for Charlie's future.  Meanwhile, Lou and Ed sneak out the back of the station.  They make it through the woods to a road and find Hank.  Ed runs away to make sure Peggy is ok, while Lou and Hank go by car.  They drive off just in time to avoid death at the hands of Hanzee, who goes after Ed on foot.

What Works:

"Rhinoceros" is a really exciting episode of Fargo because it takes place over just a few hours.  It has really brilliant pacing and tension building throughout the whole episode.  We also get to see all of the storylines really merge together and it's nice to see more of the characters interact.

As I've said before, I can't stand Peggy Blumquist.  She drives me up the wall, but I have to admit, seeing her take down Dodd was extremely satisfying.

Nick Offerman proves once again that he is one of my heroes.  He's the star of this episode, with his drunken, patriotic rants and convincing Bear to back down, this guy is amazing in everything he does.

Finally, I just want to say I really appreciate Lou Solverson.  There are a lot of useless cops in Fargo, but seeing Lou think tactically, staying calm, and dealing with the standoff was really fun.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Lou is a fantastic protagonist.

What Sucks:

Besides Peggy I have nothing to say here.

Verdict:

"Rhinoceros" is probably my favorite episode of season 2 so far.  The pacing and the converging storylines are so good, plus it's sprinkled with some excellent characters moments, and gives Nick Offerman the spotlight, which is never a bad thing.  This is television at its best.

 10/10: Amazing
