Wayne's World 2 (1993) Review

"Would you like to have dinner some night?"
-Honey

"Oh, I like to have dinner every night."
-Garth

Having moved out of his parent's house, Wayne Campbell (Mike Myers) is trying to figure out what to do with his life.  He is visited in a dream by the legendary Jim Morrison (Michael A. Nickles) who tells him he must put on a concert called Waynestock.  Wayne recruits his best friend, Garth (Dan Carvey), and several others to put on the concert together, but he must also contend with music producer, Bobby Zahn (Christopher Walken), who is trying to steal Wayne's girlfriend, Cassandra (Tia Carerre), and get her to move to Los Angeles instead of staying in Aurora with Wayne.

What Works:

Once again, Wayne's World 2 works because it's funny.  It's got some really great moments and some hilarious jokes.  The best ones are the longer elaborate ones, rather than the one-liners.  My two favorites are the Y.M.C.A. joke and the one about the Second Presbyterian Church.

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are both great.  They really shine in both movies and are impossible to dislike.  Tia Carerre and Christopher Walker are also great.  You can really feel the chemistry in the cast.

Finally, I love Gath's subplot where he is seduced by an older woman, Honey (Kim Basinger), who tries to convince him to kill her husband.  Garth's reactions to her are hilarious, and give us some of the best dialogue in the movie.

What Sucks:

The narrative in this movie is kinda all over the place and it feels like some of the story threads don't really go anywhere.  Also some of the jokes don't land.

But I guess my biggest problem is the wedding between Cassandra and Bobby.  It comes up completely out of nowhere.  I get that it references The Graduate, which I haven't seen.  If I had, maybe I would appreciate it more.  But there is no set-up for it, and I'm not sure the payoff is worth it.  I feel like we could have done something better there.

Verdict:

Wayne's World 2 is not as strong as the first movie.  The narrative is all over the place, not all of the jokes land, and I don't really get why they went with the wedding storyline, but it's still a really funny movie, with some great performances, some fantastic jokes, and a great subplot for Garth.

 7/10: Good
